Medical Examiner: The exam must be conducted by a licensed medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.
Health Requirements: The examination includes assessments of hearing and vision, blood pressure/pulse rate, and an overall assessment of the driver’s health to ensure no medical condition exists that would interfere with the safe operation of a commercial vehicle.
Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions can disqualify a driver or require periodic medical follow-up. These conditions include, but are not limited to, heart disorders, respiratory dysfunction, high blood pressure, epilepsy, diabetes requiring insulin, certain psychiatric disorders, certain vision problems, and substance abuse.
Medical Card: Upon passing the medical exam, the driver receives a DOT medical card, which must be carried while operating a commercial vehicle.
Reporting Requirements: Drivers are required to report certain medical conditions to the FMCSA and may need to provide medical releases or documentation from their healthcare provider.
